Grant Details
Approved grant funding does not usually exceed £500 per applicant, per academic year. Support is primarily targeted toward students currently receiving music tuition. Grants can be applied toward the costs of music lessons, ensemble activities, music courses, instrument purchase/hire, or sheet music.
Core Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a grant, applicants must meet all of the following base eligibility criteria at the time of application: Age Requirement: The applicant must be 25 years old or younger. Geographical Connection: The applicant must live, study, or actively undertake musical activities within the regional boundaries of Kent or Medway. Applicants living outside these boundaries may still qualify if their primary musical activities take place within Kent or Medway. Musical Discipline: Grants are open to instrumentalists, singers, composers, producers, and songwriters. The Trust values and treats all genres, styles, and traditions of music with equal importance. Grant Purpose: Support is primarily targeted toward students currently receiving music tuition. Grants can be applied toward the costs of music lessons, ensemble activities, music courses, instrument purchase/hire, or sheet music.
Financial Assessment & Means Testing
The Trust specifically exists to support young musicians who, through financial disadvantage, might otherwise be denied access to appropriate musical opportunities. A simple assessment process is used to evaluate financial need. Automatic Eligibility: Applicants are typically deemed automatically eligible on financial grounds if they meet any of the following parameters: - The young musician is currently eligible for Free School Meals. - The household is in receipt of Universal Credit or other state benefits, including but not limited to: Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Working Tax Credit, Incapacity Benefit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit). - The total gross income (before tax) of all parents, guardians, or carers residing in the applicant's home is less than £30,000 a year. Note: If a household does not meet the automatic criteria above but is still facing genuine financial hardship, the application form allows for a detailed disclosure of annual income and expenditure for individual evaluation by the Trust.
Musical Talent & Promise
While the Trust actively looks to fund musical talent, they recognize that talent manifests in many different forms. Applicants do not need to follow a traditional classical grading path. Evaluation is based on demonstrating: - An evident musical promise and passion for your craft. - The dedication and potential to reach a higher level of musicianship with the right financial support. - Clear progress within whatever music education opportunities the applicant has had access to so far. - A love for music and clear ideas on how to develop further as a creative artist.
Required Application Materials
To ensure a complete submission, applicants will need to provide the following information and documentation: - Monthly household income and expenditures, or confirmation of benefit support if applicant automatically qualifies via benefits. - A reference letter from a music teacher (if the applicant has one), or other appropriate source. This can be emailed up to two weeks after submission; however, the application will not be reviewed until it is received. Optional uploads to support your application: - The applicant's certificate of highest level music achievement (if applicable). This is not a prerequisite to apply, but serves as a helpful indicator of skill and dedication. - Audio recordings of the applicant's music-making. To ensure absolute fairness, the applicant's name must not be mentioned in the recording.
Review Process
To preserve complete privacy, confidentiality, and objectivity, the Trust Secretary removes all names from applications before they are passed to the Trustees for review. Once all requested documentation has been fully received, the Trust typically renders a decision within 2 to 3 weeks. If an application is successful, the Trust may occasionally get in touch to check on the musician's progress or request their assistance in promoting the charitable work of the Trust. All funding decisions are final. We appreciate the time and effort put into every application; however, we are unable to consider appeals or re-evaluate applications once a decision has been reached.
