2026 Passaggio Vocal Award

The third annual Passaggio Vocal Award masterclass was held on Saturday, March 28. From a field of six talented young singers, Oliver Davis was the primary awardee, singing a moving rendition of Schumann's "Ich grolle nicht."  Oliver has performed in every Passaggio masterclass since its inception, with his vocal talents growing year-on-year, so third time lucky and well deserved!

An additional award was made to Krish Parthiban, who wowed everyone with his spellbinding rendition of "Stars" from Les Miserables. The singers were ably accompanied by Tim Beveridge, who accompanies the Rochester Choral Society.

At the last moment, this year's master, rising opera star Matthew Rose, asked to be released from his commitment to Passaggio when he was engaged to step in on short notice as the bass soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.  With performances in both London and Birmingham, the concerts were recorded for future release, a boost to his already impressive CV.  Ever the professional, Matthew not only promised to adjudicate a future Passaggio masterclass, but immediately arranged an excellent substitute, Linda Hirst.

Among her many credits -- which encompass everything from early music to Pink Floyd -- Linda has sung with the Swingle Singers, and was previously the Head of Vocal Studies at Trinity Laban. As the Passaggio masterclass grows from strength to strength, we are indeed fortunate to attract the services of such highly-qualified professionals.

While Linda was making her decision, last year's Passaggio winner, Sarah Terry, held the audience in her hand as she sang "How Did We Come To This?" from The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa.

Mid-Kent College once again generously provided the venue and staff of the intimate Glassbox Theatre free of charge, for which we are most grateful.

Well done to all the singers and thank you to everyone involved.

Details for the 2027 Passaggio Vocal Award will be announced soon. Sign up to our mailing list to hear when applications next open.
