We’re being supported this evening because concerts like the one you are about to enjoy
will not be able to take place in the future without the next generation of Kent Musicians
coming in to fill the ranks.
Regrettably, despite the huge benefits of music education being exhaustively documented,
there has been a serious decline in music education opportunities in recent times. Sadly,
KCC can no longer afford the subsidies it once gave, and the musical future of many young
musicians is under threat. This is where we….. and you can help.
So, how do Kent and Medway Young Musicians Trust help? Well, in simple terms, we
support Kent youngsters who are showing musical promise and commitment but, are of
limited means and need our help to fulfil their musical potential.
We award grants to eligible young musicians of up to £500 a year.
We provide performance opportunities through concerts arranged by ourselves or supportive music groups
In addition, we run an annual vocal Masterclass and Award called Passaggio
Over the past couple of decades, we’ve helped well over 200 young people. Several
awardees are now furthering musical studies at university or conservatoire. We also enable
many to benefit from participation in county groups, such as the Kent Youth Orchestra and
Kent Youth Choir and we are delighted that one of our young awardees is, in fact, playing
violin here this evening.
I can vouch for the way music has enriched my live and I’m forever grateful to those who
helped me when I was young. It’s a huge shame if young musical talent is wasted and
youngsters concerned miss out on what is often a life changing opportunity. Do take a look
at our website. Perhaps consider signing up for news of events and becoming a Friend of
Trust.
By the way we are completely run by unpaid volunteers. Our running costs are therefore
minimal which helps ensure that any money you give will directly to helping Kent’s young
musicians.
Thank you for your time and for listening to me.
